Monticello West assisted living community in Dallas has effectively confronted the greatest threat to the nation’s well-being in our generation. For the past ten months, the Monticello West team has tackled COVID-19 through extensive financial and emotional investment, creativity and caring, and dedication to safety.
“We are fortunate to have many resources available to us, largely because of our affiliation with Life Care Services,” said Marjorie Silberman, interim executive director at Monticello West. The retirement community is managed by Life Care Services (LCS), a senior living industry leader.
“We have continuously been at the forefront of information as it has been made available from Centers for Disease Control and other health organizations and infectious disease experts,” said Jennifer Burton, director of operations management for LCS. “Monticello West has benefitted from LCS’s economies of scale, having access to PPE and other equipment to confront the pandemic during a time in which other organizations may have struggled.”
The numbers associated with Monticello West’s efforts have been staggering. As of October 31st, more than $185,000 had been invested in enhanced safety measures, including $60,000 for PPE, $20,000 for initial increased sanitation procedures with additional ongoing expenses, and $35,000 in dining disposables so that meals can be delivered to residents’ apartments as communal dining is suspended. More than 72,00 meals have been delivered to the residents’ apartments.
Additionally, more than $70,000 has been spent in over-time staffing.
Creativity and Caring Reign
As the staff recognized how difficult this time has been for the residents, they’ve integrated creative and innovative programming. “Our community life looks different but is still engaging, and we’re keeping the residents active,” said Silberman. “Our staff is making sure to visit one-on-one with residents, we have small group and socially distanced programs as well as hallway activities, and we deliver treats to the residents a couple of times a week.”
“Connecting is especially important right now,” Silberman added. “The staff has stepped up to the plate in terms of facilitating connection and communication for the residents with their loved ones. By the end of October, there had been more than 700 video calls and 400 window visits.”
Monticello West has closely adhered to the directives from CDC. “In our commitment to keeping COVID-19 away from our residents and staff, we’ve screened all staff and essential visitors entering the building, observed strict social distancing throughout the campus, and required the wearing of masks,” said Silberman.
She concluded, “We are dedicating to doing everything possible in order to continue to confront COVID-19.”
