As a flight attendant who typically spends a three-day stretch on duty, Cindy Borg can’t visit her mom, Nimva Barkham, every day. So she’s relieved to have found memory care at Monticello West.
According to Cindy, “It’s comforting to know Mom’s going to be fine and well taken care of when I’m in the air. That’s the most important thing for me—as her daughter—knowing she’s in good hands.”
Nimva moved to Monticello West’s memory care neighborhood two and a half years ago, and the main reason her daughter cites for choosing the community is the exceptional, long-tenured caregiving staff and close-knit atmosphere.
Cindy explains: “I just liked it better than the bigger, fancier places. Don’t get me wrong, Monticello West is nice. It has the feel of a small boutique hotel in New York. I always know people when I walk through the door, and they know me. The staff is quick to explain to Mom when I’m not there that ‘Cindy’s out flying today,’ and that reassures her and makes her feel safe.”
In addition to the kind, competent and compassionate care, Cindy highlights one of life’s simple pleasures—dining at Monticello West. “The food is really good. The residents always clean their plate and want dessert.”
Cindy also indicates the residential living options are a big advantage at this community. “Mom loves her apartment. It’s nicely painted and carpeted, and the size is perfect for her. She has a living room area with a full-size couch and chairs, so she can entertain guests. I visit a couple of times a week, and my husband swings by on other days. My son stops by every few weeks, too. Mom has her own space that looks and feels like home. Every time I’m there, she just seems contented.”
“I have friends with parents in places that are probably a lot more expensive,” Cindy adds. “We even looked at a place that’s closer to where we live, but it felt like a hospital. I wanted Mom to feel more like she was in an apartment setting. Smaller and cozier. And that’s definitely what Monticello West offers. So it’s not a problem if it takes us 10 more minutes to get there.”

“The minute I entered the community I liked what I saw, but it didn’t stop there. I’ve visited other communities where the furniture was lovely in the main areas and when you proceeded down the hallways, it was a different scenario. But as we continued to look around at Monticello West, I thought: This is pleasant! ”
“The staff is caring and genuine. From the beginning, we didn’t feel like we were being processed, date-stamped and handed off to the next person. The community must have an exceptional hiring process, because I have yet to find someone there who isn’t qualified, doesn’t respect me or that I don’t enjoy. The caregivers are polite, and perhaps most important, I trust them.”
